Apple has released macOS 11.5.1 to the public and while it doesn’t bring with it any new features, Apple does say that it includes “important security updates” that should be installed on all of our devices.
Apple frequently releases new updates that are designed to plug holes found in previous security systems and this release is no different. While there are likely bug fixes included here, those security fixes are typically the most important.
This time around, the fix is related to a memory corruption issue.
IOMobileFrameBuffer
Available for: macOS big Sur
Impact: An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved memory handling.
CVE-2021-30807: an anonymous researcher
As always we’d suggest downloading and installing this update as soon as possible, especially if you’re at all worried about the security of your Mac for whatever reason.
This is likely one of the last releases we should expect before macOS 12 Monterey is made available to the world this fall. The release is currently in the hands of beta testers and will arrive in or around September if previous releases are any indication.
